LEYBURN SPRINTS ON CHANNEL SEVEN NEXT SATURDAY

THIS year's Leyburn Motor Sprints, staged recently on the Queensland Darling Downs, will feature on Channel Seven's popular Queensland Weekender television program next Saturday.

The program will be broadcast on Saturday 2 October on Channel Seven Brisbane and regional affiliate stations.

The 15th Leyburn Sprints, which were held on 21-22 August, will be the highlight of a 30-minute program devoted to Darling Downs attractions.

The Sprints celebrate the running of the 1949 Australian Grand Prix near the township. Thos year they featured more than 200 cars racing against the clock on a temporary street course.

The event was won outright for the sixth time by Toowoomba driver Ray Vandersee and his self-built Skelta G-Force sports car.

The Leyburn Sprints benefited from funding under the Queensland  Events Regional Development Program (QERDP).

The QERDP is an investment program designed to extend the flow of economic and social benefits of events to regional Queensland.

A state-wide initiative, the program is committed to enhancing existing events in regional Queensland, as well as assisting in the establishment of new events.

Since the QERDP began in 2001, more than $15.3 million has been invested in 705 regional events, an indicator of the important role these events play in their communities and wider Queensland.

The Leyburn Sprints also has received support from the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal.
